WEST HAVEN, Utah — A driver crashed into a West Haven apartment complex Sunday morning after snowy road conditions caused them to veer off the road.
"If there was a child out here, that would've been terrifying," said Chris Dudley.
The Weber Fire District said the crash happened just after 8 a.m., with the vehicle hitting a lower-level apartment at the complex.
That apartment is where Dudley has lived for the last four years.
"There's been a lot of accidents on this road before. It's the main thoroughfare back into Ogden," he explained.
The crash prompted two heavy rescue units from Weber and Riverdale Fire to respond, stabilizing the patio above the apartment with a para tech shoring strut as they worked to clear the scene.
The driver was able to get out of the vehicle on his own.
"He was conscious. I asked him if he was OK and if he needed any assistance. He said his shoulder was pretty messed up so I got him some ice," said Dudley.
Dudley and his roommate were not injured.
Now other tenants on the first floor are questioning the fence separating their homes and Hinckley Drive.
"It's in the back of my mind," said Aaron Jantz. "Anything can happen. It can go through someone's apartment and kill somebody, hit somebody. People live here. This is our home."
The crash was enough to convince Dudley to move.
"With the city having zoned this as a residential area, I don't understand — a lot of people who live here don't understand — why there isn't a barricade put up for this type of thing to not happen?" he said.
He said he and other neighbors plan on filing complaints to the city.
"Clearly a plastic fence is not going to stop a vehicle going 50 miles an hour," he said.
